The premise of the Third Year 2nd Semester studio is to embrace the suburban shopping plaza as a piece of social and civic infrastructure. While ‘Suburban’ shopping spaces are often thought of as places of pure consumption, we are interested in thinking of them as infrastructure. We embrace the shopping mall as a type, a specific building typology that is in many ways a big box. Yet these big boxes, scattered throughout Sydney, are for many, the public and social space of the city. These buildings allow for fascinating social phenomena: they are places where the elderly gather, and at the same time they are spaces where teenagers first gain independence.
